DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND LITERATURE
A. Admission Requirements for the Four-Year Full-Time Programme (UTME)
Candidates seeking admission into this programme should possess any of the following qualifications:
Five „O level Credit passes in WASC, WAEC SSCE/GCE, NECO/SSCE or at least five merits passes in the Teachers Grade II (T.C II) examinations or its recognized equivalent at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include English Language, Literature in English and another Arts subject.

NOTE: Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) subjects are:
(a) Use of English
(b) Literature in English
(c) One Arts subject
(d) And another Art subject or Social Science subject.

B. Admission Requirements for the Three-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (Direct Entry)
In addition to A above, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission:
(i) At least two „A level passes in GCE or HSC to include Literature in English and one other Arts subject.
 (ii) Diploma in Theatre Arts with Merit level pass from the University of Benin or an Upper Credit level pass from other recognized Universities or institutions.
 (iii) N.C.E. with a Credit level pass in English Language from a recognized or College of Education.
 (iv) OND – Upper Credit level pass in Mass Communication from a recognized Polytechnic or Technology.

C. Admission Requirements for the Six –Year Part–Time Degree
Programme (BEL)
In addition to above, candidates with the following qualifications may be considered for admission: 
i. At least two HSC or GCE „A Level passes to include Literature in English.
ii. NCE with at least a credit level pass in English Language as the Principal from a recognized College of Education. The overall pass should be at the credit level.
iii. At least a merit level passes in DTA of the University of Benin or at least an Upper credit level pass from other recognized Universities.
 iv. At least an Upper credit level pass in OND in Mass Communication from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology.

DEPARTMENT OF FINE AND APPLIED ARTS
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
A. Admission Requirements For The Four-Year Full–Time Degree Programme (Syllabus A – UTME)
 Candidates seeking admission into the Four-Year Degree Programme should possess any of the following qualifications: At least five Ordinary level Credit passes in WASCE, SSCE/GCE, NECO-SSCE or at least five merit level passes in the Teachers Grade II (TC II) examinations or its recognized equivalent at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include English language and Fine Arts. 
NOTE: Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) subjects are:
(a) Use of English
(b) Fine Arts and
(c) Any other two subjects from the Arts or Social/Management Sciences

B. Admission Requirements For The Four-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (Syllabus B – UTME)
 Candidates seeking admission into the Four-Year Degree Programme (Syllabus “B”) should possess any of the following qualifications. At least five Ordinary Level Credit passes in WASCE, SSCE/GCE NECO-SSCE or at least five merit level passes in the Teachers Grade II (TC II) examinations or its recognized equivalent at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include English language.

NOTE: Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) subjects are:
(a) Use of English and
(b) Any other three (3) subjects from the Arts, Social/Management Sciences, or the Sciences.

C. Admission Requirements For The Three-Year Full–Time Degree Programme (Direct Entry)
 In addition to above, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission;
(i) At least two Advanced Level passes in Fine Arts and any other Subject in the General Certificate of Education (GCE) or the Higher School Certificate (HSC) or its recognized equivalent
 (ii) At least an Upper Credit level pass in the Ordinary National Diploma (OND) or a Lower Credit level pass in Higher National Diploma (HND) in Fine Arts from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology or at least a Credit Level pass in Fine Arts (DFA) Diploma from the University of Benin or from any other recognized University.
 (iii) At least a credit level pass in Fine Arts and an overall merit level pass at the NCE or its equivalent qualification from a recognized College of Education.

D. Admission Requirements For The Two–Year Full–Time Degree
Programme (Direct Entry)
Candidates with at least an Upper Credit level pass in HND, who satisfies the requirements in Section above are eligible for consideration for Direct Entry admission into 300 Level.

DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES
A. Admission Requirement For The Four-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (UTME)
Candidates seeking admission into the four-Year Degree Programme should
possess any of the following qualifications:
Five „O Level Credit passes in WASC, WAEC, SSCE/GCE, NECO SSCE/NABTEB or five Merit level passes in Teachers Grade II (T.C. II) examinations or their recognized equivalents at not more than two sittings. Subjects should include English Language and any other four in the Arts and Social Sciences.
Candidates for this programme need not have previous knowledge of French provided that they have Credit-level passes in at least one Arts subject and four other subjects one of which should be English Languages in WASC, WAEC SSCE/GCE, NECO SSCE/NABTEB or at least five merit level passes in the Teachers Grade II (TC II) examinations one of which should be Arts subjects at not more than two sittings.

NOTE: Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) subjects are:
(a) Use of English
(b) Any combination of three subjects either in Arts, Social Sciences or Sciences.

BAdmission Requirements For The Three-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (Direct Entry)
In addition to above, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission:
(i) At least two „A Level passes in the General Certificate of Education (GCE) or Higher School Certificate (HSC) or its recognized equivalent at not more than two-sittings in the relevant Arts subjects.
(ii) A Merit level pass in the University of Benin Diploma in French or its equivalent from any recognized Institute.
(iii) Nigeria Certificate of Education (N.C.E.) Credit level pass in English/French from any recognized College of Education. In addition, candidates should have at least an overall Merit-level pass.
 (iv) Diploma (Diplome DEtudes Francaise, 3e Degre) of the Alliance Francaise, the Nigeria French Language Village, or its equivalent from a recognized institution. UAB to set question in French in Post DE.

DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY & INTERNATIONAL STUDIES
HISTORY:
A. Admission Requirements For The Four-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (UTME)
 Candidates seeking admission into this Programme should possess any of the following qualifications:
Five „O level Credit passes in WASC, SSCE, GCE, NECO or merit level passes in T.C. II or their recognized equivalent at not more than two sittings. Subjects should include English Language, History or Government, a second Arts subject and any other subjects.

NOTE: Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) subjects are:
(a) Use of English
(b) History or Government
(c) One Arts subject
(d) And any other subject.

B. Admission Requirements For The Three-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (Direct Entry)
 In addition to above, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission:
(i) At least two „A level passes in GCE or HSC or a recognized equivalent. Subjects should include History or Government and any other related subject.
(ii) N.C.E. Credit level pass in History, government and social Studies from a recognized College of Education. Candidates must have an overall Credit level pass.
(iii) A Merit level pass in the University of Benin Diploma in Public Administration, Diploma in Social Work, Diploma in Theatre Arts, Diploma in Law and Diploma in International Studies and Diplomacy or equivalent qualifications.
(iv) At least an Upper Credit level pass from other recognized Universities in the same subject areas as specified in (iii) above.

INTERNATIONAL STUDIES AND DIPLOMACY:
A. Admission Requirements For The Four-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (UTME)

Candidates seeking admission into the Four-Year Degree Programme should possess any of the following qualifications:
Five „O‟ level Credit passes in WASC, WAEC SSCE/GCE, NECO/SSCE or five Merits level passes in Teachers Grade II (T.C. II) examinations at not more than two sittings.
Subjects should include English Language, History or Government, a Second Arts subject and other Arts or Social Science subjects.

NOTE: Unified Tertiary Matriculation examinations (UTME) subjects are:
(a) Use of English
(b) History or Government
(c) And any other two subjects from Arts or Social Sciences.

B. Admission Requirements For The Three-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (Direct Entry)
 In addition to above, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission:
(i) At least two „A level passes in GCE or HSC or a recognized equivalent. Subjects should include History or Government and any other related subject.
(ii) N.C.E. Credit level pass. Subjects should include History, Government and Social Studies from a recognized College of Education. An overall Credit level pass is required.
(iii) A Merit level pass in the University of Benin Diploma in Public Administration, Diploma in Social Work, Diploma in Theatre Arts, Diploma in Law, Diploma in International Studies and Diplomacy, Diploma in Local Government Administration, Diploma in Library Studies and Diploma in French or equivalent qualifications. (Upper Credit) from other recognized institutions.
(iv) An Upper Credit level pass in Diploma in Mass Communication/Journalism, Diploma in Library Studies or equivalent level pass from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology. Diploma in Strategic Studies from a recognized institution.

C. Admission Requirements For The Five-Year Part-Time Degree Programme B.A. (ISD)
 Candidates seeking admission into this programme should possess the following qualifications:
At least Five „O level Credit Passes in WASC, WAEC SSCE/GCE, NECO/SSCE or at least five merit level passes in the Teachers Grade II Certificate Examinations (T.C. II). The subjects should include English Language, History or Government, a second Arts subject and any other Arts or Social Science subject at not more than two sittings. In all cases, English Language, History or Government cannot be waived.
D. Admission Requirements for the Four-Year Part-Time Degree Programme B.A (ISD) (Direct Entry)
 In addition to requirements in above, candidates should possess any of the following qualifications: 
(i) At least two HSC or GCE „A level passes or their recognized equivalent in History or Government and any other related subject.
 (ii) N.C.E. with at least credit level passes in History, Government and Social Studies from a recognized College of Education.
(iii) At least a Merit Level Pass in any of the following University of Benin Diploma: Public Administration (DPA), Diploma in Social Work (DSW), Diploma in Theatre Arts (DTA), Diploma in Law (DIL), Diploma in Local Government Administration (DLGA), Diploma in International Studies and Diplomacy (DISD) Diploma in French (DIF) and Diploma in Library Studies.
(iv) At least an Upper Credit level pass from other recognized institutions in the following programmes: Diploma in Public Administration (DPA), Diploma in Social Work (DSW), Diploma in Theatre Arts (DTA), Diploma in Law (DIL), Diploma in French (DIF), Diploma in Local Government Administration (DLGA).
(v) At least an Upper Credit level pass in the Diploma in Mass Communication/Journalism, Library Studies from recognized Polytechnic or Colleges of Technology.
(vi) Diploma in Strategic Studies from a recognized institution

DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS AND AFRICAN LANGUAGES
I. LINGUISTICS
A. Admission Requirements For The Four-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (UTME)
 Candidates seeking admission into this Programme should possess the following qualifications:
(i) Five O Level Credit passes in WASC, WAEC SSCE/GCE, NECO/SSCE, NABTEB or its equivalents, or five merit level passes in Teachers Grade 11 (T.C. 11) certificate examinations at not more than two sittings. Subjects should include English Language.
(ii) At least a pass in Mathematics is required.

NOTE: Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) subjects are:
a) Use of English
b) Any other three Arts subjects

II. Direct Entry Students are not admitted into this Programme.

B. Admission Requirements For The Six-Year Part-Time Degree Programme
 Candidates seeking admission into this Programme should possess the following qualifications:
i. Five O Level Credit passes in WASC, WAEC SSCE/GCE, NECO/SSCE, NABTEB or its equivalents, or five merit level passes in Teachers Grade 11 (T.C. 11) certificate examinations at not more than two sittings. Subjects should include English Language.
ii. At least a pass in Mathematics is required.
iii. Direct Entry students are not admitted into this programme.

2. LINGUISTICS AND EDO LANGUAGE
A. Admission Requirements For The Four-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (UTME)
Candidates seeking admission into this Programme should possess the following qualifications:
i. Five O Level Credit passes in WASC, WAEC SSCE/GCE, NECO/SSCE, NABTEB or its equivalents, or five merit level passes in Teachers Grade 11 (T.C. 11) certificate examinations at not more than two sittings. Subjects should include English Language and a good command of Edo Language.

NOTE: Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) subjects are:
a) Use of English
b) Two relevant Arts subjects
c) Any other subject

B. Admission Requirements For The Three-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (Direct Entry)
 In addition to above, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission:
(i) At least two A Level passes in GCE or HSC or recognised equivalents in any two Arts subjects
(ii) NCE in any two Arts subjects with an overall Merit level pass from a recognised College of Education
(iii) Credit levels pass in Diploma in Edo Language from a recognised institution.
(iv) A Merit level pass in the University of Benin Diploma programmes.

C. Admission Requirements For The Six-Year Part-Time Degree Programme
 Candidates seeking admission into this Programme should possess the following qualifications:
Five O Level Credit passes in WASC, WAEC SSCE/GCE, NECO/SSCE, NABTEB or its equivalents, or five merit level passes in Teachers Grade 11 (T.C. 11) certificate examinations at not more than two sittings. Subjects should include English Language. At least a pass in Mathematics is advantageous but not compulsory.

D. Admission Requirements For The Five-Year Part-Time Degree Programme (Direct Entry)
 In addition to above, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission:
(i) At least two A Level passes in GCE or HSC or recognised equivalents in any two Arts subjects
(ii) NCE in any two Arts subjects with an overall Merit level pass from a recognised College of Education
(iii) Credit levels pass in Diploma in Edo language from a recognised institution.
 (iv) A Merit level pass in the University of Benin Diploma programmes.

3. LINGUISTICS AND IGBO LANGUAGE
A. Admission Requirements For The Four-Year Full-Time Degree programme (UTME)
Candidates seeking admission into this Programme should possess the following qualifications:
Syllabus “A”
i. Five O Level Credit passes in WASC, WAEC SSCE/GCE, NECO/SSCE, NABTEB or its equivalents, or five merit level passes in Teachers Grade 11 (T.C. 11) certificate examinations at not more than two sittings. Subjects should include English Language and Igbo Language or Literature.

NOTE: Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) subjects are:
a) Use of English
b) An Arts subject
c) Any other two subjects

Syllabus ‘B’: Candidates for this programme do not need to have any previous knowledge of Igbo, provided they have Credit level passes in at least one Arts subject and four other subjects which should include English Language in WASC, WAEC SSCE/GCE, NECO/SSCE, NABTEB or its equivalents, or five merit level passes in Teachers Grade 11 (T.C. 11) certificate examinations (one of which should be an Arts subject) at no more than two sittings.

B. Admission Requirements For The Three-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (Direct Entry)
 In addition to above, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission:
(i) At least two A Level passes at the Advanced Level General Certificate in Education (GCE) in one sitting or in the Higher School Certificate (HSC) in one sitting in any two Arts subjects.
(ii) A University of Benin Diploma with minimum of Merit pass level
(iii) An overall Credit level pass from other recognised Universities and Colleges of Education
(iv) A first degree in a language or communication-based field of study.

4. FORENSIC LINGUISTICS
A. Admission requirements for the Four-Year Full-Time Degree programme:
(i) Five O Level Credit passes in WASC, WAEC SSCE/GCE, NECO/SSCE, NABTEB or its equivalents, or five merit level passes in Teachers Grade 11 (T.C. 11) certificate examinations at not more than two sittings. Subjects should include English Language.

(ii) At least a pass in Mathematics is required.
NOTE: Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) subjects are:
a) Use of English
b) Any other three subjects

DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY AND RELIGIONS
A. Admission Requirements For Four-Year Degree Programme In Philosophy
 Candidates seeking admission into the Four-Year programme should possess any of the following qualifications:
At least five Ordinary Level Credit Pass in WASC (WAEC), SSCE/GCE, NECO SSCE or at least five merit-level passes in the Teachers Grade II (TC II) examinations. The subjects should include English Language and any two other subjects from the Arts at not more than two sittings. A Pass in Mathematics is a minimum requirement.

NOTE: Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) subjects are:
a) Use of English and
b) Any three other subjects.

B. Admission Requirements For Four-Year Programme Degree In Religions
 Candidates seeking admission into the Four-Year Religions Degree progamme should posses any of the following qualifications:
At least five Ordinary Level Credit Pass in WASC (WAEC), SSCE/GCE, NECO SSCE or at least five merit-level passes in the Teachers Grade II (TC II) examinations. The subjects should include English Language, Religious knowledge, and any two other subjects from the Arts or Social Sciences at not more than two sittings.
NB: For both academic programmes, History and Government are regarded as two separate subjects.
Direct Entry Students are not admitted into both Programme.

DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE ARTS AND MASS COMMUNICATION
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR THEATRE ARTS DEPARTMENT
A. Admission Requirements For The Four-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (UTME)
 Candidates seeking admission into the programme should possess any of following qualifications: at least five ordinary Level credit passes in WASC, WAEC, SSCE/GCE, NECO SSCE or at least five merit-level in the Teachers Grade II (TC II) examinations. Ordinary level credit passes in qualifications at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include English Language and any other two Arts subjects, one of which must be Literature in English.

NOTE: Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) subjects are:
a) Use of English
b) Any two Arts subjects
c) And another subject
B. Admission Requirements For The Three-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (Direct Entry)
In addition to A above, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission.
(i) At least two Advanced Level passes in the General Certificate of Education (GCE) or the Higher School Certificate (HSC) or a recognized equivalent qualification in any two Arts subjects.
(ii) Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) with at least an overall merit-level pass in Music from a recognized College of Education. At least a credit-level pass in University of Benin Diploma in Theatre or an equivalent qualification (Upper Credit) from any other recognized University.
(iii) At least an upper credit-level pass in the Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Theatre Arts from a recognized polytechnic or College of Technology.
These candidates would be screened by the Department through an audition before being admitted finally into the programme.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR MASS COMMUNICATION
Admission Requirements for the Four-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (UTME)
Candidates for admission into the four-year degree programme in Mass Communication Department should possess five credits at the ordinary level, which must include credit in English and Mathematics.

Note: The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) subjects are
(i) Use of English
(ii) Any two art subjects
(iii) And another subject
B. Admission Requirement into Three-Year Full-Time Degree Programme (Direct Entry)
Candidates for Direct Entry Admission shall possess five credit passes in the WAEC/ordinary level not more than one sitting. Two of the subjects shall be at the Advanced Level. Candidates who obtain 5 credits including English and Mathematics at the secondary school certificate level teachers grade II or the ordinary level at one sitting with a Diploma in Mass Communication at distinction or Upper Credit level from University of Benin or any institution of Higher Learning recognized by the Senate of the University of Benin.

Admission Requirements for Six Year Part-Time degree Programme in Mass Communication

Admission requirement for six year part-time degree are the same with full time degree. At least five credit pass at ordinary level which must include English and Mathematics in WASC, WAEC, SSCE/GCE, NECO SSCE or at least five merit level passes in the Teachers Grade II (TC II) examinations at not more than two sittings and applying the NUC minimum standard.
